When I ask students what they most want from English, the answer is almost always the same. They want to speak with more confidence.

When I speak with parents, I hear something similar. They want their children to have more opportunities in the future.

Right now in Japan, those two hopes are beginning to connect in a new way. The development of conversational AI tools such as Google Gemini is creating real possibilities for language learning that did not exist even a few years ago.

One of the biggest challenges in English education is time. Language growth requires repetition. Students need to try speaking, make mistakes, adjust, and try again. In a classroom with many learners and limited minutes, it is impossible to provide endless speaking practice for every student.

This is where AI can play a supportive role.

Students can now practice short conversations privately and at their own pace. They can role-play interviews, ask for simpler explanations, request corrections, or practice expressing their opinions. For students who feel shy, this lowers anxiety. For motivated learners, it increases practice opportunities beyond the classroom.

This year is particularly important because of the growing integration between Google Gemini and the iPhone. As these technologies work more closely together, AI becomes easier to access in everyday life. A student can check pronunciation, improve a sentence, or ask for clarification while commuting home. English study no longer needs to be limited to a desk and textbook.

Of course, AI does not replace teachers or effort. It cannot substitute for critical thinking, creativity, or real human interaction. If misused, it becomes a shortcut. If guided carefully, it becomes a training partner that supports consistent growth.

In my own classroom, I have already begun using AI in practical ways. I create manga-style worksheets and visual materials that reinforce grammar and conversation themes. Many students in Japan respond strongly to visual context. When language is connected to characters and scenes, it becomes easier to understand and remember.

AI allows me to design these materials more efficiently, which means I can adjust lessons more quickly to meet different learning styles.

As Meiji Setagaya begins a new chapter this April, I believe AI can serve as one meaningful tool in supporting the future growth of language development at our school. Not as a replacement for tradition, but as a bridge between strong educational values and emerging technology. If we approach it thoughtfully, AI can help us create an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and confident as they prepare for an increasingly global future.

AI is not the goal. Student growth is the goal.

By combining Japan’s strong educational traditions with new technology in a responsible way, we can move forward with clarity and purpose.

生徒に英語で何を一番伸ばしたいかと尋ねると、多くの生徒が「もっと自信を持って話せるようになりたい」と答えます。

保護者の皆様からは、「将来の選択肢を広げてほしい」という声をよくいただきます。

現在、日本の教育は新しい段階に入ろうとしています。Google Geminiのような対話型AIの発展により、英語学習の方法が広がりつつあります。

英語学習の課題の一つは時間です。言語の習得には繰り返しが必要です。話して、間違えて、修正して、また挑戦する。その積み重ねが成長につながります。しかし、限られた授業時間の中で、すべての生徒に十分な発話機会を提供することは簡単ではありません。

そこでAIが補助的な役割を果たす可能性があります。

生徒は自分のペースで会話練習を行い、説明を求めたり、間違いの指摘を受けたりすることができます。人前で話すことに不安を感じる生徒にとっては安心できる環境となり、意欲の高い生徒にとっては練習量を増やす機会になります。

今年は特に、Google GeminiとiPhoneの連携が進むことで、AIがより身近な存在になります。通学中に英文を確認したり、自然な表現を調べたりと、学習が日常生活の中に取り入れられていきます。

もちろん、AIは教師や努力の代わりにはなりません。思考力や創造性、人との対話を置き換えるものではありません。適切に活用することが大切です。

私自身も授業の中でAIを活用し始めています。文法や会話を強化するために、マンガ風のワークシートや視覚的な教材を作成しています。視覚的な文脈があることで、生徒は状況を理解しやすくなり、記憶にも残りやすくなります。

そして、今年4月に明治世田谷として新たなスタートを迎えるにあたり、AIは本校の言語教育のさらなる発展を支える一つの有効なツールになり得ると感じています。伝統を大切にしながら、新しい技術を適切に取り入れることで、生徒一人ひとりの可能性をより広げることができると考えています。

AIそのものが目的ではありません。目的は生徒の成長です。

教育の価値を守りながら、未来に向けて前進していきたいと思います。
